Marijuana and Food: A Pairing that has Stood the Test of Time

Few things in life go together better than marijuana and food. Whether ingested together or separately, they are a match made in heaven.

So much in pop culture – movies, TV shows, books, radio and Internet shows – has used the “stoner stereotype” of the “munchies” to great effect. Pot brownies have been used as hilarious comedy devices for decades.

But in reality, because of the prohibition of cannabis, it’s not something that has been talked about all the much out in the “real world” as opposed to the “underground” where marijuana users have been forced to dwell.

Of course, as many of you know, that is changing. The last 4 years have brought major changes to the marijuana law reform movement and it has gathered an impressive momentum. Where culture used to be the driving force in people’s perceptions of marijuana, now changing laws are the impetus for changing people’s minds about marijuana and making it more mainstream.

CBS News recently did a story about an outdoor dinner in Colorado that featured – not only edibles – but smokeable marijuana as well:

The 100 diners at this $200-a-plate dinner smoked a citrus-smelling marijuana strain to go with a fall salad with apples, dates and bacon, followed by a darker, sweeter strain of pot to accompany a main course of slow-roasted pork shoulder in a mole sauce with charred root vegetables and rice.

And with dessert? Marijuana-infused chocolate, of course, grated over salted caramel ice cream and paired with coffee infused with non-intoxicating hemp oil.

The diners received small glass pieces and lighters to smoke the pairings, or they could have their marijuana rolled into joints by professional rollers set up next to a bartender pouring wine.

This is not a description of a particularly awesome recent Cannabis Cup; these are just people having dinner. And this is not a story from the future; this happened in early October, 2016. And it’s happening more and more in states where cannabis is legal for adults.

The future for marijuana and food is a limitless one thanks to legalization. That's something we can all get excited about.
