The United States' drug war propaganda office, the Office of National Drug Control Policy is officially the least essential part of The White House.
According to The New York Times, who obtained shutdown details from the The White House, 90.9 percent of ONDCP staff is furloughed due to the partial government shutdown. Of the 88 full-time employees at the ONDCP, eight will be working this week.
Drug law reformers have called for the shutdown of the ONDCP for years, but it's taken House Republican opposition to the Affordable Health Care Act to bring the government, and hence the ONDCP to a halt.
The ONDCP has been responsible for the ineffective Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, dubbed D.A.R.E., as well as “this is your brain on drugs” and “above the influence” campaigns, none of which have had much of an effect on marijuana usage rates, though they've cost taxpayers countless hundreds of millions of dollars. The U.S. Drug Czar routinely makes a fool of himself, saying medical cannabis is not a medicine, or declaring an end to the War on Drugs, and then continuing to fund the war at prior levels.
