As someone who has been writing about cannabis issues since 2009, it’s always gratifying to see the things those in the legalization movement have been saying for decades being proven true in the real world now that legalization is becoming a reality.
Marijuana legalization advocates have long said that legalization will undercut the black market, reducing criminal profits and lessening their ability to sustain violence in pursuit of their goals. And this is exactly what’s happening.
When you think about cannabis, usually the subject of Amsterdam pops up somewhere along the way. Amsterdam has always been thought of as the “Capital of Cannabis” since it was the first city to introduce cannabis cafes (or “coffee shops”) in the early 1970s where locals could go spark a joint without The Man (i.e., the government) breathing down their backs. The brainchild of Australia’s New South Wales Department of Premier and Cabinet, the “Stoner Sloth” campaign is supposed to be an “educational” advertisement steering impressionable youths away from the horrific dangers of cannabis. In reality it has just become a viral punchline that highlights continuing pockets of reefer madness.
Everyone that I love and enjoy spending time with has very discerning opinions. I think being opinionated is also a sign that you are person both exceptionally judicious and considerate — two qualities of high value; I have always said the most considerate person is also one of the sharpest and especially discerning.
Those with a strong will usually have strong opinions, and they rarely keep from sharing them. It is a great thing to have strong convictions, but acting on them is important too — just try not to be a jackass.
It must be hard to combat marijuana. Fear mongering is habitually employed, but it is a crutch that preys and is only effective on those that fail to educate themselves. We have discussed the whole idea that the marijuana industry has the potential to become analogous to the miserable giant that is Big Tobacco.
Ireland has been in the headlines recently and congratulations have been pouring in to Minister of State for the National Drugs Strategy Aodhán O Ríordáin for his progressive decision to decriminalize cannabis (as well as heroin and cocaine). Despite these reports, the real answer to whether Ireland is decriminalizing cannabis is a resounding and disappointing "no".
